A sluggish internet connection can be highly disruptive and, in some cases, may impede your essential tasks. Let's explore some helpful tips for troubleshooting internet issues at work and home.
In this guide, we’ll review the following:
Tip: Using an Ethernet cord can result in a more stable and faster internet connection than a wireless connection, particularly for tasks requiring high speed and reliability.
Check your connection
To identify an internet problem, it's essential to establish an initial measurement of your internet speed. Numerous free online tools for testing internet speed can be found, but the most straightforward approach is to utilize a search engine like Google to look up "internet speed test."
Click on the "Run Speed Test" option, and the test will commence. It typically lasts around a minute.
Your results will include three measurements: Mbps download, Mbps upload, and Latency.
Mbps download measures how quickly information can be sent to yours from other websites or computers.
Mbps upload measures how quickly information can be sent from one computer to another.
Latency measures the roundtrip time it takes to send information between two computers. Unlike upload and download, you want this to be as small as possible.
Internet connectivity within an office or household can fluctuate significantly. While one room may enjoy swift speeds, relocating to the next room might result in connection disruptions. To gauge these discrepancies, it is a good idea to perform speed tests in various locations.
Note: If you encounter internet issues while working on-site or using your employer's Wi-Fi, please contact your IT department for assistance.
Reboot your network
Refreshing your network can help accelerate a slow connection by clearing outdated data, akin to unclogging a shower drain. To perform a network reboot, you can follow these steps:
Disconnect both your router and modem.
Allow a minimum of 1 minute to pass.
Plug in only the modem.
Wait for at least 2 minutes.
Reconnect the router.
Wait for at least 3 minutes before resuming your activities.
If this doesn't work, consider contacting your internet service provider to determine why your internet speed seems slow.
